
Course Description
This certificate course focuses on the basics of health and wellness. Students will enhance their knowledge and skills in holistic health and wellness so they can live healthier and longer lives. Needs assessments in health will be completed weekly by students so they can become aware of their present status and reflect on possible future changes. Wellness interventions and strategies for making positive individual behavior changes will be addressed to promote overall wellness growth.
- Become more aware of the dimensions of health and wellness (physical, emotional, intellectual, social, spiritual) and summarize how these concepts impact their personal health and wellness
- Examine the determinants of health, wellness, and fitness (lifestyle, social, biological) and discuss how these contribute to their health, wellness, and fitness levels
- Explain the positive and negative attributes people have towards doing physical activities and state how they impact participation
- Explore and describe how physical activity can promote optimal wellness, prevent conditions associated with aging, and reduce hypokinetic diseases
- Assess and state the value of physical activity and how it helps people achieve health, wellness, and overall fitness.
- Increase awareness and utilization of health and wellness resources and services available to students
- Explore healthy eating guidelines and apply them to your current eating practices
- Identify and discuss behaviors that contribute to lowering your stress levels, increasing the amount of sleep you get each night, and relaxing.
- Enhance their knowledge of the negative impact of cigarettes, nicotine products, alcohol, and illicit drugs and identify effective prevention and intervention strategies that can be used to reduce use.
- List and explain the key healthy lifestyles that influence your health and wellness
- Explore the value, components, and how to create a personal health and wellness vision statement/plan and create one reflecting their future self.
